have i missed something?

Post by Zach's Glass »

ok i have a question. have i missed something or what, the weatherhas turned cooler and when i go to repair a bullseye in the pressure cycle it filles in beautifully, i use 5 min pressure, followed by 30 sec of vaccum, followed by 5 min of pressure, followed by 30 sec of vaccum, and end with 5 min of pressure. when i go to release the pressure and fill the pit with pit resin i can see small shades where it looks like the resin had eased out. now should i heat it a little, use the uv rays from the sun, or uv light, how do i keep this from happening? thanks rosco

First dont make the mistake of 5min 5min throw away your watch.
Pressure till i looks like youve stopped then vac watch the stuff move into the injector then when it seems to have stopped pressure again repeat till its full not just the 2 or 3 cycles the Mfgs tell you. GO SLOW! in the cold glass is fragile
Many people fall into the cycle fantasy some mfgs push there is no set time all breaks are different and you need to know how to watch the fill and judge the effect.
Second I dont care what the mfg reps tell you about pressure curing they sell equipment I fix chips in weather as cold as 20 below zero outdoors. PRESSURE CURE! Bulls in cold weather shrink even more than usual if you fill it and cure it while under pressure it stays full plain and simple especialy when its cold. All resin shrinks when it cures some more than others.
Third when its cold I go to a thinner resin keeps you from having to cook the glass adding heat to a wet break may drive the moisture out but adding heat in big amounts to a cold windshield often just causes a big snap followed by a OH SH** Its science 101 heat on inside cold on outside plastic layer between the 2 and a flay in the outside layer something has to give and its gonna be your break.

Are you drying the break before you start to fill. I also agree with not using a watch, every break we look at is slightly different to the last, so you must use slightly different tecniques for each one. Just look closer at what is happening to the repair as you fill it.

Screenman,

for a while I told customers "windshield (screen to you man) chips are like women, all very different, unpredictable, you just don't know what to expect."

One very nice lady driving a $1,500,000.00 Prevost with a $2,900.00 one piece screen said to me "Bill, think about that statement...........would not it be much better to describe chips as similar to snow flakes, no two being alike?"

"Yes mamm!"
