Resin!!

Post by ctannehill »

Thought I would open a new thread with another attempt to get some opinions.
I enjoy all of the expertise in this forum and it is great to get different takes on WSR issues.
First, I am looking for resins. This is pretty daunting, there are a lot of resins out there for a lot of different prices and they all claim to be the best. I have read this forum on this supject and heard a lot of people pitching esprit and detla resins. My question is this, has anyone heard of/used US Windshield repairs resins? If so, what is the quality on stone chip resin/crack pit fill resin?

Second, I am sure some of you have already read my post on the gm repair kit I considered buying off of ebay for $600. I decided I would explore the market.
I informed the board that currently I am using my old boss's cheaper brand of tools and that he would need them back. Just found out I can use them for a bit longer. The kit I am referring to is here http://www.wizardwindshield.com.
I use this kit daily, and it is the only kit I have had experience with. This leads me to the following question. Is this kit of such quality that I would be fine sticking with it, or should I continue to explore the different kits?
I mean if this kit does quality repairs ( in my opinion it is pretty good, but I don't have a lot to judge it to ) should I go on using it and then when my ex-boss needs it I return and buy the same equipment?

Thank you for you thoughts.

I have never used US Windshield tools but if that is what you are using and can do a good repair with it, go for it. Otherwise, go to Ebay and get the one you want. As far as resins most reputable WSR companys will send you free samples of their resins to try, get all you can and see which ones you like best. And if you find one you like you may be able to get windshield repair resin wholesale pricing.

Chris,

There is only one way to find out which resins work best for you and that is through experimenting. Asking somebody what the best resin is, is kinda like asking all of us which brand of tooth paste we use. I'm sure everybody will provide you with different opinions. It's what works best for you that really matters.... 10-4?. Think of your teeth the same way as you would a practice shield! Do you have one to use to compare results with? If not, I highly suggest you get one.

Any reputable company like Delta will send you a free sample to try out, just ask them. If a company refuses to send a free sample forget them! Because they're probably not interested in servicing you or standing behind their product. They just want the sale$$$

It amazes me that you've plugged every company other than Delta in your post. The main reason many techs use Delta is because of their superior commitment with helping you become successful. Are they the cheapest? No there not! However, they do stand behind their products, training, equipment and services and will bend over backwards for you. Something many other yahoo companies won't provide. Personally service means everything to me and it's worth paying extra for! Why? Because it will eventually pay for itself ten fold over a short period! Always look at the bigger picture.

The equipment your currently using now is sub par for todays standards. I can say that because I currently have that same equipment sitting on a dusty shelf in my garage. Not that I wasn't able to do decent repairs with it but truthfully I was very limited to what I could repair. I'm a person that doesn't like limitations.

My post wasn't intended to offend you in anyway......just my open and honest opinion. Which I offer free of charge:)

Whatever your decisions are..........I wish you the best!

Good point StarQuest, customer service is extremely important. On monday I called Delta for a new set of seals a (9.50) sale for them big woop.... I gave the girl on the phone my name, she knew my address, payment info, was very cheerful and that made me feel like I was doing business with a family member. I stopped home today for lunch and my seals were in my mailbox, when I saw the package was thinking it was something ordered from Ebay a week ago. I was shocked to see the seals arrived from Oregon to Florida in less than 48 hours without paying for express shipping, that kind of service means alot to me, thanks Delta.

Hey StarQuest,
I appreciate your insight on this matter and I totally agree. I am now in the process of contacting the better known WR companies (Delta included) out there in cyberspace and by phone to ask for samples. I must address one comment in your post, " It amazes me that you've plugged every company other than Delta in your post."
Man you guys are loyal!! I like that, that tells me that Delta is a damn good company for so many to suggest them.
The only reason they were not mentioned is because I know nothing about them. If you read my first post titled "Need an opinion on Toolkit Please", you will see that I am a complete novic when it comes to the equipment in the industry. I know how to do repairs and have been doing them for sometime, however I have been up till now teathered to what the company wanted me to use. This is my first venture on my own and I will be considering Delta highly. If I failed to mention any worthwhile companies it is only because of my inexperience dealing with any of them.
Thank you for your response,
I will keep you posted

I have some US Windshield Repair resin and one of their tools, as I do several major suppliers. :) The resin is good quality, imo.

It's a bit thicker than most resins... the crack resin I only used on one crack, but it worked well. I used the crack resin for pit filler, per their instructions. It actually did as well as other pit resins but is thinner so a second application is almost always needed for a flush surface.

My regular everyday resin I get second hand from a friend... I don't know where it comes from but I suspect it's GT acid free. Don't ask don't tell. ;) It works for me so I don't care where he gets it.

I've tried Espirit in the winter. I think it's a great alternative resin when it's cold or there is a problem getting the glass warm... cause it's very thin. The repairs look great. Just don't believe the hype about it working with trace moisture int he break. It does penetrate "moist" repairs better, but results are still best when it's dry... like any resin. Did I mention it's $100 an ounce? And the pit resin is even more... ouch.

I have had samples from Delta, but there was barely enough resin to play with. So I can't really comment... what I've done with Delta's looked top notch. But my "black market" is just as good and cheaper. Sorry, Jeff.... maybe you should send me a bigger sample, like a half ounce? :D

Woah.... hold on. I never said I bought my resin from EBay, or anything else you are ranting about. How do you figure there's a problem with the resin I use?

I use excellent resin.... if I find something I find to be superior I would switch.

I have zero known failures using "my" resin... I've been using it for several years, probably over 10,000 repairs.

What I said about "my" resin is that I buy it from an associate who buys directly from a manuf. That's all. Name brand doesn't matter, and neither does price... it's great resin.

Some resin has a bad shelf life and others don't. If it has acid added to it, it likely has a relatively short shelf life.

And I don't use it in cracks... which I rarely bother with, btw. Only when someone begs and it's fresh blood.

If trying different resins over the years is gambling, excuse me while I continue to prosper in my bad habits. ;)

Sorry to have offered a few general comments on resins.

Have a nice day everybody.

I am really enjoying all of these posts. I do detect a lot of loyalty to the brand names that some of you utilize. Am I wrong in assuming that it is the acrylic acid that is the primary ingredient to a successful repair?

How do some of you rate thick or thin resins? Is it necessary {or desirable} to use a thin resin in colder environments? A thicker resin in warm climates?

I haven't seen any comments lately from our friend in England---the one that has made so many repairs. I always enjoy his posts.
