Big Pit

Post by chips1144 »

I got a very big rock chip the other day, out of drivers sight almost hidden by the mirror, it left a BIG pit in my windshield, the actual pit is slightly bigger than a nickel with damage inside slightly bigger than a quarter...
What would you do??? Is there a way to properly fix this or does it really need a replacement...

Any chance of those sizes in inches I have not yet been to the States and have no idea of the size of your currency.

In fact maybe someone can tell me the size of a nickel/dime/dollar so that I do not have to ask this question again, as this seems to be your main way of measuring breaks.

Thanks in anticipation of a reply.

a dime is the smallestat about 5/8 of an inch, a nickel is about 13/16 ths and a quarter is about 1 inch and a dollar bill is about 6 inches. Hope this helps.

Wow...a nickel sized pit? That is too big for me. Some would say to fill it with the thickest pit resin, cure it and then drill in and/or then make a mini bullseye to connect all the legs together. And then fill it like you usually do to repair it. Some also used a curing tab and poke a hole in the middle as an adapter for large pits. There's alot of posts that explains it better than I do. Just do a search for it. For me, I will only do it if the customers are desperate. Otherwise, the repair will come out with low expectations. Some people may have good results with this.

Wow, A pit the size of a nickel I would definitly say this one is a good canidate for replacement. A pit this size would swallow most injectors curios to see any thoughts on this one.

If it were my personal ws I would use it for some practice and replace it later. I got hit the other day . It went from .25" batwing to 3" crack before I could get off the highway and fix it.

Thanks to everyone for their response...

Isidman thanks for your measurements...

Screenman... Ive found my british change and I can do you a quick USA to Brit p conversion...

The smallest, A Dime (10 cents) is the same size as a British 5p piece...

A Nickel (5 cents) is the same size as a British 1p penny...

A Quarter (25 cents) is the same size a 10p piece...

My pit was slightly bigger than a british penny...

Ok guys here's how I fixed it, I fixed it before I posted, I knew it was gonna rain and needed to fill it...
At first I thought my adapter would work, then when I got close I could see the pit was too wide and too deep, My adapter fell into the pit, I realised it really needed to be replaced but I didnt really want to do that, its original and I wanted to save it even if it didnt look perfect...
I was gonna fill it with pit filler then drill and fill, My wife came up with the idea of using a curing tab with a hole in the center, Id never heard of that, I decided to try it, I even used packaging tape around the edges to try and keep it tidy, I injected resin, I couldnt pull a vaccum (I did try) I cured, then used lots of pit filler to fill...
I have to admit I was a little dissapointed with the results, its the worse looking repair Ive ever done, but to be fair it really needed replacement... I look at it as a learning experience...
Congratulations Magicogar, you came up with exactly the same Idea...
Thanks for everyone's Input...

Well, at least you tried. Just a note, somebody else came up with the idea.
