Can anyone tell me how to get a hold of some recycled glass so that I can practice Rock Chip Repairs in my garage?? I think this would help me. Like the old saying goes, "Practice makes perfect".

Thank you all for your time.

WiseCrackWR,

For practice glass try your local junkyard or salvage yard. Also try your local glass shop that deals with home and commercial glass. They should be able to cut you a piece of laminated glass the size you want.

Pay it forward,

Your local glass shop probably will give you an old windshield if you ask. One they have pulled from a car. They are just gonna throw them away. When I have needed one for training an employee, Ive just caught one of their guys at one of my fleet accounts. I tell them I'd like one of the windshields they are pulling out, and they are always happy to oblige.

Thanks for the headsup but when I talked to some of the local glass shops, they said that they could not pass on a piece of glass due to liability reasons. I am going to see about buying a piece of laminated glass for practicing and hope that will work for me.

Just go around back and fish a discarded windshield out of the dumpster, put it in your car, truck, or van and take it home.
Many of the suppliers sell a table top stand to hold the windshield while you practice on it.
Please don't take offense, but that is what I did.
Good Luck!

Sorry if I am asking questions to learn more about this industry but that is what this forum is for, isn't it? By the way, glass shops in my town keep thier glass in trailers with locks so they are not responsible if someone gets into it... Dummy!

WOW!
like the man said go around back, there were at least 5 shields sitting there and one of the techs asked me if I wanted the ones out of his van, they only had a break in them.

I didn't mean to be insulting or condecending by the "dummy" remark. That town you live in certainly seems to have their trash containment under control. I would then purchase a piece of cut laminate to suit your purposes. Perhaps a glass shop would have a scrap piece they would give you or sell you for a couple of dollars, but then I hope they would'nt get weird about it.
Yes, this forum is form positive, constructive information for novice and experienced w/s repair people so keep reading and posting.
Again, Good Luck with everything
