Acrylic Acid in Resin

Post by mafsu »

Does the acrylic acid in resin etch the glass making for a better bond? or is it just a good cutter to thin the resin?

Take some resin with acrylic acid place it on a piece of practice glass out of U.V. and leave it for an hour. Now wipe the resin off and see if the glass is etched.

Not trying to come down on anyone using acid in their resin Delta and GM make excellent resin with acrylic acid. Just trying to point out that it is not necessary.

So how ya figure they get the edges to bond instead of just filling the crack?Got to rough em up somehow the acid serves a purpose as a side note ever see a msds sheet on our stuff? ask your dentist to see the one that comes with his bonding material. basicly same stuff only he adds color to it and they charge him 25 times as much his is also a acid base gotta get it to stick to the choppers

Acid etches the glass allowing the resin to hold it together. All major brands of resin willing to show their MSDS sheets have some form of acid in them to etch to the glass.

Some tout their "acid free" resins, but in small print you'll find it's only acrylic acid free. They can have as much or more acid (and acrylate or methacrylate), just not acrylic acid, which I find VERY misleading.

Why?

Well, they have acid plus they have acrylate (which is an acrylic polymer). It's just not technically called "acrylic acid" that way.
