Define a repair:

Post by Robin Hood »

After Yvan post about addressing legislation in Canada I decided to take a look at Maryland's laws and regulations on repairs. To my suprise there is none.

Maryland requires a safety inspection of your vehicle only when you purchase your vehicle prior to titling or retitling. (New or Used) Inspectors are required to fail an inspection if a windshield has a 1/4" crack, chip or pit in the Acute area (5x8 over the steering wheel), a 1/2" crack, chip or pit in the hazardous area (wiper sweeps) and 3/4" crack, chip or pit in the non-hazardous area. (anywhere else) that is alls accumlitive for multiple damage.

Doesn't seem to unreasonable right. Well the problem is that is an inspector sees a scar from a repaired crack, chip or pit it is still considered a crack, chip or pit. There is nothing in the code that allows for them to be repaired and acceptable once repaired.

So if one was to make changes to these regulations they would need to change the language to "unrepaired" cracks, chips or pits. Doesn't seem like a big change but to take this one step further and remove interputation from the inspectors I believe a repaired crack, chip or pit should be drfined in the regulations.

So that is where you all come in. How would you define a repaired crack, chip or pit?

Good Question, the definition that I put forth in my presentation today to the Governament was the following
- a repaired break shall have a smooth finish that does not interfeer with the action of the wipers(in otherwords the pit is filled)
- A repaired break does not have any parts that reflect light, ie; unfilled legs on a star(a problem with oncoming cars at night, sun during the day)
- it will not have any obstructions to the drivers vision greater than 5mm(3/16) in diameter(black spots from trapped air in a flower break for example)
-a repair will be acompanied by an invoice that shows the location of the break, the vehicules identification number and licence number, and the certification number of the technician(another part of my presentation).
- a repair shall come with a lifetime moneyback garrenty( a true money back, not a " bring it to us and we deduct the cost of the repair from a replacement garrenty

No mention was made of a maximun length for cracks, just that the crack must have a visable point of origin.

Thanks Yvan all good stuff. Any other comments and suggestions on this.

Really could use some help here. This could help w/r become an approved measure in Maryland and could be used elsewhere in the country. Now it is not recognized at all and subject to interputation.

Any other states have anything in code that defines an acceptable repair?
