refraction differences-resin
Hi there fellow techs..Customer demand is forceing me to slow down fixing my future service vehicle and garage and get fixing glass.Did my first repair and customer was happy. Practiseing crack repair right now. Was wondering though..is it true that different brands and viscositys will have a different refractive index than each other and thus be closer or further away from that of glass? what I am getting at is that when the crack repair is finished and cured I can still see alittle reminder that there was a crack there. Yes guys I did get all the air out.I am impressed with the strength of the repair. I think this crack repair is gonna work out allright as long as I select the right repairable cracks.I am useing a medium thick resin (polylite) . please chime in with the resins you are useing.Yes I realize there may be some biased opinions. Thanks people
Re: refraction differences-resin
Is crack repair worth getting into. I use glas weld and only do chips with the exception of small cracks coming out of the star breaks and if I have a customer who just wants the crack stopped then I'll of course drill, pop a mini, and run the crack into the mini and then fix. Is it lucrative to fix cracks? Personally if I have a windshield that is cracked badly I'm gonna replace it. How much do you charge and do you fix a lot of cracks.
Re: refraction differences-resin
We do cracks frequently. We use Delta Magnibond and GT CR. We charge by length. We ask the customer to tell us over the phone how long their crack is. Always add 6 inches to what the customer says and charge accordingly. Only once a month do I get a customer who is truthful about the length of his/her crack! I think they are scared if I knew I wouldn't come out to the job. The most difficult cracks in my opinion are the ones on big rig glass. That glass is so darn thick that even if you get a good fill you can still see the outline of the edges. The upside is good repairs on the thick stuff never fail do to vibration or flexing of the glass like might happen on a cheap hyunai accent for example.
