Hi Burnman,
The article that you referenced is not negative in any way - it's a reality check for any new business startup.
Buying the equipment to do repairs is simple - learning how to market and promote your business is the key to success.
Keep in mind that the windshield repair equipment manufacturers are in business to sell equipment, not teach you how to run a business.
It's been estimated by knowledgeable repair professionals that 9 out of 10 repair kits that are sold end up in a closet within six months because the purchasers could not successfully sell their services.
Windshield repair is like any other business - to be successful takes a lot of hard work and outstanding salesmanship skills. Invest the time to read every book you can find on marketing, promotion, publicity and sales.
Good luck no matter what business you decide to pursue - we appreciate your service to our great country!

Now that's funny! It's also a proven fact that 98% of all stats are made up.

Not necessarily by you Mike, but whoever told you that was feeding you a line!

Re: Negative WR Business Article
Anyway, regarding the article. The author definitely didn't have all his facts straight by any means ($10 per repair for supplies for example), but the basic premise is, you still have to sell, regardless of your training.
Delta Kits is an equipment manufacturer, not a "business opportunity" supplier. Now, obviously, people use our equipment to start a business, but the only thing we charge for is the equipment. All of the advice on business start up, marketing, advertising, all of that is free.
No matter what, when getting in this business, remember it's a sales business, just like the article said. We can show you how to use our equipment, we can even show you how others have been successful. We can give you all the tools to succeed, but your determination will be the key to your own success.

Jeff:
Perhaps the author of that article was a refugee from New Orleans?

That is funny. I'm glad I didn't see it before starting our biz. I might have believed it.
FOR THE RECORD:
I started our biz with a Glass Mechanix GM2000 kit, two banners and 1 roll of duct tape to hold the banner to the side of the truck. All was put on a credit card because I didn't have the money.
We have since moved onward and upward. I quit my regular job 3 months later and have been the HUMILIATION to no end for my old boss by my up and quitting to go do windows among other things. People to this day from my old life think I went psycho and are scared of me.
WHY DOES WSR WORK?
DELTA KITS, GM, GT, Liquid Resins.
A.C.T.
RLI Insurance
Guys like Coitster and Brian Jeremiah for motivation
And the local sign shop, printer shop and the few honest advertising people.
The guys I feel sorry for are the bottom level pyramid scheme slaves left with nothing but boxes of vitamins and cleaning products.

Re: Negative WR Business Article
ive got to tell you guys this is funny as it gets to me and here is why. ive been online for 2.5 hours now, after i checked in with the forum and read this thread i went outside to letter up the truck (didn't want to procrastenate any longer) i left the computer tuned into the forum and started. here is why it's funny, i read the following from the article :
"Now, here's the real question. Can you seriously expect to shell out $3,000 for some starter materials and training in the windshield repair business, then put a sign out, and expect to start earning money right away? Of course not! "
well before i had my full phone number on the truck a couple stopped and said " couldnt help but notice what your putting on the truck can you fix this???" (bullseye) so i replied yes. they were in a bit of a hurry so they requested a card and will be calling to set up and appointment for later in the week. too bad you can't put a sign out and expect to start making money right away .right????

Re: Negative WR Business Article
Those are all great success stories. I think the mobile repair business is a lot more common in the US then here in Canada. When I did my research in Edmonton, a city of about 1 Million, I could only find one Yellow page add for a mobile WR service, although most glass replacement shops offer this service. The article did not stop me from getting into this business, but I know it will be a lot of hard work to get established. Problems I can see here is that it will be hard to operate 12 months a year because of the weather and I don't want the overhead of a shop.
