Star with one long leg

If you have a star chip where only one of the legs is very long, say 4" or so, what is the proper technique to fix it.

Do you first pop the bullseye and then fix it like you would a long crack repair with the bridge on the star end (pressure only) and slowly fill the long leg by dropping resin on it etc.... Since you aren't using vaccum would the smaller legs of the star fill?

The question is based on a rock chip that I saw in a salvage yard over the weekend. I was out practicing etc..... I didn't fix it, I am going back this weekend.

I am pretty sure it was on the surface.

If it was a subsurface crack, what difference would that make in the repair process?

If it is a SURFACE leg then you PROBABLY can't pull a vacuum due to the leg being open on the surface unless you can lay down some resin and then cover the leg with film tabs. If it is subsurface then repair as usual.

High Altitude,
The easiest way I know to tell if the leg is surface or sub surface is to drag a razor blade across this 4 inch leg slowly and if the blade catches somewhat it is surface fix like a crack. If blade doesn't catch or you can't feel it with the blade then it is still subsurface. I know it is hard to understand this somewhat but after checking some you will see what I am talking about. Hope this helps.
