I never do. If it's a surface chip and I can just fill it with pit resin while I'm there, it's no chage to anyone. If I find additional damage that is real, I'll show the customer and charge for it.

Never. Even if the customer has no Idea. I inform them of what I will do usually while I am finishing the job at no cost. There are too many people out there doing this and it is pure hack.

It is important to build your reputation as someone who is not going to take advantage of anyone...it is also a good way to lose an account (unless they force you to charge them).

Im new to the business, and for what I have seen, all of that makes perfect sence about not charging for niks. It is customer service, and customer service always brings customers back, not to mention, People will spread the word--bringing you even more business.

In my opinion, it's insurance fraud. A large outfit in Arizona was busted for this some time ago. I don't know the disposition of the case against them. Any way you look at it, this is either illegal, immoral, unethical, or some other apt description. I, too, repair surface chips for free but sometimes have to eat the gas money and time because there is no other repairable damage to be found. Maybe you can make a deal with your customer for your service but don't ask the insurance company to pay you for it.

I did some today for a dealer and charged them full price. As I do with most people. I cannot get anyone to work for me for free so why should I do it.

I agree with Screenman about getting paid when you do work. I do these basically every day for rental fleets when they are turning back cars. However I advise the general public that it's basically a cosmetic repair. Like Screenman when I do these I charge full price.

I also have a few accounts that expect surface chips to be repaired. I do charge accordingly as well. I believe that if a service is done and supplies are used, it cost you money and there should be a charge to cover your time/expenses. Some good judgement should come into play depending on the scenario but overall I charge a fair price and provide a quality service that deserves compensation. I am in business to make money fairly. Some may operate there businesses differently and that is fine. To each there own. Just don't give the farm away as you may eventually find yourself without a farm.

Always fill in the surface chips if they have a regular repair to go with it as an extra bonus, and ALWAYS WRITE FREE surface chip repair on the invoice. Everyone likes a deal and Everyone is concerned enough about their vehicle to call about the original ding. They feel I am an honest businessman, and refer me to their friends with the 4 cards I left them, with my always reminder to stick them in their glove compartment, so they will know where my number is when they hear of someone needing a repair.
