Hiring Employees

Post by SGT »

Trying to get some first hand insight on how to set up employees from those that have them.

Do you use a do not compete clause? Do they really hold up in court?

How do you pay them? Hourly, By the repair, if so what %

Do you offer any kind of incentives?

Any other pointers?

I am just looking a little ahead for, when the day comes I need to hire employees. Thanks to all who contribute their wisdom.

Myself I would use a NON-Compete. This varies from state to state.

I would buy all suppiles and equipment and pay them 40-50 % of what they do.

Has anyone just hired someone to do sales for them? I want someone to do the footwork and me do the actual repairs. I know I will get ragged on by this but I just am not a salesman. I was wanting to get someone and possible pay them like $15.00 out of my $40.00 repair for the sales work. SGT I think some type of non compete would be nice if it would actually be followed not sure if it would hold up or not.

i guess it might be a good thought to hire peoplebut you need to give it a lot of thought
1. if you add an employee you should have the expectation of triple your business..why? because if you only double its not worth the agravation..all expenses will double right?and if you are doing lets say 50,ooo. and make a small profit what do you think you will make after double expensesand payrol?
2. when you hire someone they will probably do repairs after work or for someone like a mechanic or whoever and keep for themselvesl
3. no compete clauses can be broken..i dont want to say how here..plus if you take him to court are you prepared for the expense?? it aint cheap!!
4. you have to worry about qualityand DEPENDIBILITY!!!!!
i would never want all the agravation..

GWT,

Yeah I agree. You need a non compete clause. Whether it will stop someone from competeing against you or if it will hold up in court, who nows. I do not mind the competition as I think it is good but I do not want to train someone to provide the quality repairs we provide give them acsess to our accounts and show them the ropes and then have them turn around and compete. It is just a risk you have to take if you want to grow I guess. For now I am getting my retired dad factory trained. No worries there at least.

On a side note...anyone going to DK's August training? I will see you there.

Tooldini,

I actually like that approach, not becuase I do not like selling though. I actually enjoy the game! You are a smart man to be able recognize your weakness and want to surround yourself with people who are stronger and smater than you in those areas. I would say that is how most if not all business owners work. After all they do not set out to hire a bunch of morons and still expect to be successful.

Thanks Guys.

I Would Like To Comment On Hiring , No Compete , Etc.
The No Compete Would Have To Written By A Lawyer First Of All
(thats Going To Cost U), Also If The No Compete Is Broken,
Its More Than Likely Going To Cost You More To Deffend The Clause
Than To Have It Written Up. Therefore I Think That If Your Willing To Take The Chance Of Hiring On. You Have To Be Willing To
Take That Guy To Court If It Comes To It. Unfortunately.
So I Guess You Just Have To Trust That The Loyalty Between You And Your Acounts Are Strong.
I Also Heard That No Compete Agreements Are A Scare Tactic.
In Some States.

Tooldini,

The problem here as I see it is you are likey to be able to do about 10 repairs per day on average. That means if your sales guy sold all of them he would recieve $150 per day would anyone work for that amount? A good salesperson is one who can see a oppertunity and go for it, you will more than likely end up employing a second rate sales person or lose a lot of business, when he finds he can employ a tech who will work for 50% he will be gone.
I suggest you find a way to enhance your own sales ability. Setting up a tent is a great way to do this. People approach you and you get plenty of practise talking and selling its a great confidence booster.

I pay my guys 28$ a repair... They are also responsible for submitting the invoice. This is the easiest sale in the world and people see that and will be more willing to go out and get sales. I don't know about 10 a day on the doors though.. That's tuff to get ten every day consistently.

Thanks screenman,, I was thinking like someone that could work when ever they wanted you know make there own hours part time or whatever. In my area most people would totally love to make $150.00 per day. Most people don't make over $50K a year LOL me included. I was working on the tent thing for a bit but my local township and city were giving me a bunch of crap and wanted me to be bonded, and several other things. So I looked into getting bonded and nobody seems to be able to bond me. I guess I could do it the illegal way and just see if I ever get questioned. I here some people do that and never get questioned. I also don't think I could even do 10 a day myself seems most damage around here are tight stars breaks that seem to take 45 minutes to fill completley. So I would just be happy with like 5 a day. I have been working on my sales entered a few car dealers got shot down by a couple and a couple said they would work with me but months later still no work from them and I have been calling back. There are also NO tents in my area so if I can do that I think I would do well. Thanks for the help and I am gonna work on my sales some I just have a hard time with the initial first words :(

thanks
Jeff
