Drilling??

I am new to windshield repair, but have been practicing for a 4 weeks alot every day. I have purchased the delta kit, and attended the training as well. (excellent training by the way) i have been trying numerous repairs in many different ways, I know Delta does not recomend drilling unless resin will not flow, but what I was wondering what do most of you techs out there in the field every day using Delta kits recomend???

It seems to me that in most cases drilling seems to allow resin to flow easier and faster, and the end results seems to be great.

Now i have also tried many breaks without drilling as well, they also turn out nice, but most times seem to be hard to get filled or they take a long time.

What do you guys do, and or recomend and why?

As time goes on, you will learn from experience which breaks you should drill and which ones wont require drilling. Some are obvious, and others take a little more inspection on your part.

Personally, I prefer not to drill if at all possible simply to avoid the vibration on the glass that the drill can make. The repairs turn out excellent whether they were drilled or not.

SO JUST DRILL EVERYTHING ! JUST DON'T DRILL ALL THE WAY TO THE LAMINATE ! J.M.

I was gonna ask about drilling to the laminate,, is it bad to drill to the laminate? I seem to hear some people do and some don't. I watched a how to video on the net and this company said to drill to the laminate. I very rarely drill but was wanting to learn how to do it properly. My company says to tap the drill on the area about 80-90 times unless the pit is very shallow. I drilled to the laminate on some practive glass and did a repair it turned out very good. Just in case I need to drill I have came across some repairs that I just couldn't seem to fill right.

Do I absolutely need drill lube or will a bit of resin work? The couple I did drill made the drill hole very visible in the damaged area. Kinda had some dark looking spots in it. Thanks for the help

I took the Delta training and have Delta equipment and have been repairing since the first of the year. I've only drilled 2 times. Once in a while I'll find the resin is slow or not traveling, but I just heat the spot from the inside and it flows like a champ.

Are you sure the crack is filling and not just the glass expanding.

As for drilling to the laminate and the repair looking great, either you did not go through or your expectations of what a repair should look like are wrong.

There is never an excuse to drill through to the laminate. Learn to drill and pop and also learn when to.

If you can get away without drilling how do you stop a long crack running or how do you repair someone elses bad jobs, what about those starbreaks when one of the legs is not connected. Do not be afraid to drill just make sure you know when to.

The drill bits most of us use are not meant to be used with any lubricant, I got this from the manufacturers but I am still sure someone will disagree.

Thanks screenman, I have only drilled thru to the laminate on practice glass to see what it looked like and sounded like. I was trained to only drill if absolutely necessary and only drill half way thru then pop a small bullseye. I have done that twice and the results were good. My main issue was the appearance of the drill hole. The hole seems to be pretty noticable to me i was wondering if there was a way to make this look better. Any ideas on what I may or may not be doing with this.

as far as drilling the closer you get to the laminate you will definetly hear a change in pitch..that will let you know you are getting close..their is a supply co out west that sells a top for your pit filler bottle that has a long thinneedle nose that will deposit pit filler farther into drill home..does a good job of cutting down noticeability of hole
