I have used two extra large white bath towels from Walmart to cover the W/S with excellent results. In windy conditions I just tuck it under the wipers and then close one front door on an upper edge of the towel.
I tried the water/alcohol mix last summer and I think it worked too fast.
No crack outs with the towels. One or two doors open using the first 3 minutes or so to do the insurance paper work and place the call gave it enought time to come down to a reasonable temp without any loss in productivity.
Safest W/S cool down technique IMHO

I think that the towels are cotton and may retain the heat, where would the heat be absorbed?
A wet towel wiped over the glass seem to work very well, then shade it with a umbrella or plastic

I get the car, or at least the windshield, into the shade and then cover the chip(s) with 2-inch wide mailing tape and spray DISTILLED water, very little at a time, on an area about 2 feet square around the damage on the inside and the outside of the glass - after putting a towel on the dashboard.
The hotter the glass, the slower I go. I carry fans, big and little, battery and AC, to help cool the glass.

Where we work, summer is almost all 100+ degree days with bright sun. Spraying anything on the W/S is risky. Laying out the two white towels reflects the sun and absorbes heat off the W/S. Leaving the doors open allows it to cool down on the inside too. No crack outs doing repairs. It works very well, even a complete idiot can do it without fouling it up.
