Practice Glass

Hey Guys,

This is more then likely a dumb question but....
Do the side windows have the same make up as a windshield?
Meaning, can I get my hands on one of these or do I need to have the
whole windshield to practice on:icon_roll ?

Side windows on almost all vehicles are tempered glass. Only a few high end cars have laminated side windows. You should be able to get practice glass at a junkyard or glass shop.

Well, we buy glass in sheets and cut it, but in your situation you'll end up probably getting a whole windshield. You can have a glass shop cut glass probably for a fee if you don't want the whole windshield. Or, you can buy a glass cutter, cut both sides, and dissolve the laminate with denatured alcohol or our competitors dry out solutions (:)).

I stopped by our local glass shop and asked for an old windshield. All the ones in the dumpster were broken up pretty good. So the gentleman told me to come back the next day. I did - and he had a really nice windshield that he'd replaced from a Mazda Miata. He never asked me what I was going to do with it (and I never told him that I'd be competing with him for business!).

Rescue, do yourself a favour, ask if you can practice at a wreckers. I found and other have said the same over the years that working on a windshield on a stand and one in a car is different. Practice glass is ok if its supported well. A windshield in a car has much less flex than one on a stand. This makes a BIG difference when your trying to flex a leg on a star. I started with an old windshield on a home made stand. I had trouble getting things to fill like the video showed. Jeff and Matt showed me the right way to do repairs. I then practiced on old cars going to the wreckers and the results were night and day from the stand. JMO
