Heat guns are way to hot to use with a windshield. I used to use a heat gun to warm up metal for PDR, it would crack out a windshield very quickly.

Hairdryers from second-hand stores. Burn'em up, throw'em out, get some more.

I bought a 12-volt hair dryer bran new for $14 dollars on line. I just googled it to find it.

I have not used it in the field yet. I bought it so that I could plug it into my portable battery system with the 12-volt cigarette plug on it.

It puts out enough heat to slowly warm the work area on the glass (or your hands when the're cold), and it definately does not blow with the same heat and air power of an AC powered hair dryer. But I think it will come in handy and do the job.

...

My brother gave me one of those 2-million candle light hand-held spot light guns for Christmas, (its a big sucker). It is so bright and the light actually throws out a lot of heat. I was able to melt the frost off my windshield (12-in diameter circle) in about 30 seconds from a distance of 4-feet away.

I was also able to heat my wife's arm up (alot!) from across the room at about 15-feet in 10 seconds.

The spot-light has a rechargable battery, and comes with an AC and DC charging adapter. It looks like a big-ol Martian Ray gun or something,... but it definately helps when needing a portable heat source.
