Fused Curing Tabs

Post by Steelheader »

Has anyone else had any problem with the curing tabs "fusing" to the pit resin when curing? One of the fellas in training had this happen to his tabs. I was doing some practice repairs today and the same thing was happening to mine. Two tabs fused with the pit filler and I had to rip it off of the repair. It pulled some of the filler resin off of the glass when I did. What is causing this, and how can I prevent it from happening?

The tab will not peel from the pit resin.

It's a piece of practice glass I got from training at DKits. So I know there's no RainX.

I'll try to be more specific. When I fill in the pit after injecting the resin into the damage, I cure the pit resin with my light. I leave the light on for @ 3-5 minutes. When I try to remove the tab from the windshield, it will not separate from the cured pit resin. The curing tab is "fusing/bonding" to the pit resin when it cures. The edges of the tab that are not in contact with the pit resin obviously aren't sticking. When I grab a corner to peel it off of the repair, the area that is contacting the pit resin rips/breaks from the tab. I destroy my tab and the razor blade becomes very dull when scraping of the remaining pieces of tab that are bonded to the resin. This is now starting to happen on almost every repair.

Bad tabs, usually because they are too thin. Doesn't hurt the repair. but it really kills a razor blade.

Have to agree with mafsu....bad or to thin of curing tab. I've never experienced that before. What are you using?

Have had some tabs stick more than others as they get older and used a bunch of times. Sometimes I use a tab that I sandpaper to bond to a large pit so I have a surface to seal to. These tabs are difficult to remove sometimes. Try using a fresh clean tab. I have even cut tabs from the plastic from the shrink wrap stuff that I buy, although a little thick they work OK. Also use them on tabbing long cracks on flat parts of windshield.

I agree the old been used tabs are most likely your problem the things are cheap why re use em? I cut mine from a photo page put em in an empty listermint case and keep them in my pocket The pages I use I get at Staples about $1 each and makes a 100 or more strips so why re use?

I use the ones from LR most of the time. I reuse them just because I'm old fashioned that way I guess. Don't like to have all those little plastic tabs blowing around my site either. So I put them back and use them again. I also use a little box I found by Plano for, I guess, fishing stuff, to keep them in. They are just the perfect size and have a regular hinge so they last for years. They come with one larger box in the middle and two smaller attached to the outside. I use the smaller ones for tabs. Waterproof too, not that it matters.
