Problems with Mini Windshields?

Post by Brent Deines »

Have any of you repaired a lot of Mini windshields? If so, have you had any problems?

A Mini dealership that recently started repairing their own windshields has had a very high percentage of crack outs, and they are now understandably gun shy. We sent out one of our reps who did two repairs for them without any problems, but they are still skeptical and think there may be something about the Mini windshield that makes it crack easier when a repair is attempted.

We did a little research and apparently there were some problems with the original installation that was causing some problems, but it is my understanding that problem has been corrected. Other than this one dealership we have not heard of any problems from the rest of our customers, but any input from windshield repair forum members will be greatly appreciated.

Only done about 8 or 10 but never had a problem, I would suggest somebody needs retraining.

New techs who dont really understand what is being done or dont fix enough to get good at it tend to have problems train a guy for a day and then he does maybe a couple a week he is going to have problems I have seen this at a couple places that have tried to do it internal they usualy teach the wash/detail guy and he isnt the sharpest tack in the box thats why he is the wash guy and not doing something technical. No offence to that job its important

I've done a couple, don't recall any problems. I think GlassStarz hit the nail head. "We did a little research and apparently there were some problems with the original installation that was causing some problems" What were the original installation problems ? Just curious.

Wade did the research so he can probably answer this than I can, but my understanding is that there was a problem with too much flexing of the A pillars, causing stress cracks in the windshields of a large percentage of Minis. I'm not 100% sure how big of a problem it was, or when it was fixed, but it wouldn't make me near as nervous as a windshield repair tech as it would as a windshield replacement tech.

I really appreciate all the quick feedback. I kinda figured most windshield repair techs would not be affected by the stress crack issue, but thought it was worth throwing out there.

Just looked through some of my records Brent, came across 3-4. No issues with the repairs. I will say this is not a car I run across very often on my lots. Must be a keeper.

On a side note, I had a call from Hunterdon BMW in NJ today. Certainly not in my area. May just a coincidence. Does that ring a bell for anyone you know? If so, email me.

Just another repair for me as I have done several. I would suspect too much injector pressure, if flexing too much pressure or not cooling down glass. Maybe more training? I have had several dealerships try to go in House so to speak. It normally doesn't last long due to breakeage and or crackputs. I use this to increase my price WHEN and they always do come back.

That is what I call losing the loyalty bonus Mr Customer. I always go back slightly higher, not enough to make them mad just enought to give me a bit fo satisfaction.
