Where to obtain laminated glass samples?

Post by anythingclose »

While I was thinking about getting some old windshields to practice on I thought about having before and after glass samples to show prospective customers. Before I start searching for techniques on how to cut and polish my own samples from old windshields, I figured I'd ask if anyone knew where to buy some. Nothing too big, maybe 12"x12" or smaller if possible. Does anyone know where to buy something like that? I have searched the forums for "glass samples" but only came up with people talking about using them, not where they got them.

I am going to try to contact some windshield manufacturers and see if they offer samples soon, but that is my only idea at present aside from creating my own. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Delta Kits has 20x20 flats of laminated glass but if this is too big and you do not want to cut it I would recommend calling a glass supplier.

Almost any shop that sells glass of any type will sell laminated, however this may be thinner than WS glass. That said it will do the job you require it to do.

Just chiming in and I hope this helps,

First of all, you'll not likely find windshield samples and cutting down one yourself would probably end in a mess and a waste of a practice screen.

Flat laminated glass at a glass shop is usually 1/4" thick which is slightly thicker than many windshields. Call around to your local glass shops to see if they carry 3/16", some do.

Instead of getting small sample sizes cut (no room for equipment to attach), and you want to have a before and after, buy a 12 x 12 piece, mark out 6- 6x4 sections and perform your B/A on each. Afterwards, go back to the glass shop and have them cut on your marks and seam the edges. TaDa...you'll have 6 perfect samples! The cost should be about 25 bucks or less for whole process. While there, you have the oppotunity to introduce yourself, offer them fleet service and possibly leave a cardholder and cards in their reception area.

One more note, ask for the cutoffs to practice making the breaks on, it will behave a just a slight different than a WS. Start with a larger size for more or bigger samples.

Good luck in your endevour
