How many would you do.
Some years ago I was being shown around a transport yard by a new customer who wanted me to repair his truck screens, now this guy had very poor eyesight and kept pointing out screens that did not need repairing and saying to methat one needs doing, when in fact it was bird dropping or suchlike. Now at the end of this trip around the yard he had asked me to do 11 of the 18 trucks in the yard, I knew only 4 wanted repairing, difficult situation. Do you call him a daft old git who cannot see, or do you do the 11 screens 7 of which did not need repairing.
This is an honest situation that happened to me some 17 years ago and has just come to mind again.

I don't understand why it was a difficult situation. I'd do the 4 that needed repair and explain to him what you were seeing..bird droppings or pitch. What if he actually knew that the other 7 were not breaks and was just seeing how honest a businessman you were?

I would rather be honest with a customer to keep his business for a life time than cheat him once for a few extra bucks. I go through this same situation everyday. I service fleets and car lots that NEVER check behind me to verify what I have told them needs work. That is the reason still have all these customers with more calling me everyday. The biggest part of this is, I can sleep at night knowing I did the right thing!

That is exactly what I did and I still have that customer now.

I would only do the legit repairs as well, I run my business by doing high quality honest work in hopes to get plenty of referral work by doing so. If I don't get referrals at least I can sleep good at night and know that I am doing the right thing.

Re: How many would you do.
I get those all the time. Last week a customer flagged me down at the market on a Sunday and he said he needed the windshield fixed before leaving town. He gave me his address and I told him I would see him in about 30 min. When I looked at the damage, it turned out to be an old repair where the pit fell out and just needed touching up. I cleaned it up and filled it with pit resin. When he showed up, I told him it was no charge and that it had been repaired before and sometimes over time some pits will fall out. I could have charged him the $49.95 that I quoted him and he would have never known the difference. So now I have a clear conscience and a new customer to boot. Oh, by the way, he did give me $10.00 for my trouble which I gladly accepted!
