Bubble Dome Vs. U.V. Shield (comparison test)

So today I was doing a two chip repair on a windshield. I was using the bubble dome on one and a regular U.V. shield on the other. I noticed the glass was considerably warmer on the bubble dome repair. So I grabbed my infrared thermo and the temp of the glass under the dome was 107 degrees. The glass under the U.V. shield was 90 degrees. The outside air temperature was 47 degrees :o . The vehicle was parked facing the sun. Gotta love the intense Colorado sun.

So the winner is! I would say carry both. They both have their advantages in certain situations and it's nice to have options. I have always been partial to the bubble dome for numerous reasons:

1. It's easier to work under than the U.V. shield
2. I like to aim my hair dryer up into it on colder days to circulate warm air around the repair area.
3. It can keep the repair area dry in the rain.
4. Apparently from todays observations it helps retain heat which is great on chilly days.
5. Draws attention to you and gets people asking what you are doing.

What I like about the U.V. shield
1. Nice and portable-can be rolled up and put in tool box
2. Keeps the repair area cooler. Better for hot days helps get the windshield temp down.( I am assuming probably because it is tinted, the bubble dome is not)

I was shocked at the 17 degree difference. The truck was parked square to the sun and the glass outside the shields was the same temp. Interesting observations I thought I would share. By the way, the these are shields that Delta Kits sells....results may vary with a different brands.

Roo!

You are so right about the Dome!

My "Dome" is hanging in the Windshield of my service van. I am always asked "What the heck is that"? People will literally pull up beside us at a stop light and just stare it and ill say.. "Its aUV Dome for Windshield Repair, Oh you fix the little chips in the glass. Well next I have just earned business..

What a marketing tool!
I dont have a tinted screen yet, Have been thinking of getting one. Just due to the fact of the Bulk the dome has I dont think I have room for another dome in the van as my other reconditioning equipment is there! I too love the fact that I can capture more heat inside the dome as I am working.

It does work!

I was doing some experimenting a few days ago with the Dome and the UV rays!!
My brother was skeptical, So I dabbed a bit of resin on a WS and placed the dome over it.
Right beside it I dabbed some more resin on the WS and didnt cover it up.

He was shocked that after only 5 minutes the one w/o coverage was begining to harden and the one covered was still wet!

Try it! Set up your bridge, inject resin and do not cover it. I guarantee you will have a ring around the base of the seal against the glass after 5 or 10 minutes.

WHoever created the dome is a Genius!

Take Care ROO! :D

It is also called premature curing, I have been shouting about it for years, glad someone else is having a go.
