Free Quickbooks Simple Start download

Found this free download for Quickbooks "Simple Start" software:

http://download.cnet.com/QuickBooks-Sim ... 08523.html

I originally paid around 80 bucks for this but they have decided to release it for free. It's really all a home based service business needs for "money in-money out" transactions and expense recording and monthly reports. It also has invoice templates which you can print out and/or email.

Just wanted to say a quick thanks to you for the info. I found it and I downloaded it. Looks real simple to use! Question? When billing the networks, how do you put that info in the program? Do you put under Safelite, Lynx or the customer who owns the car? , or the insurance company the insured has? Make sense?

Smithy I have been using qb for a long time and I think you will find it very user friendly. The way I list insurance work is how I got it.I have one customer called Lynx and another called individual. My insurance will fall into one of these and that allows me to track where my work is coming from. One of the most important things you need to remember in an accounting is to be consistent in where you put things.Do not make accouts with different names that are the same thing and one time put something in the other and another time in the other one.I have a 2 year accounting degree and it does really help me.QB will actually help you make journel entries, not sure how much this free thing will do.That is probably something just to get you to buy the program. If you need some help just let me know.

Thanks Bill! The free one seems to be ok, you can add expenses by check, credit card etc. Also it appears you can attach a couple of bank accounts. Plus it has invoicing capabilities as well. Have not really looked at it that much to see if you can change the invoice or not, but you can attach a memo and note to the invoice, I am assuming where I will put my reference number, claim number and vin# etc.

But if I understand you correctly, whether you are billing Lynx, Safelite, Harmon etc, you put under them as a customer, correct?

Thank you.

Lynx,I list as lynx but the rest(safelite) i list as individual. As far as Harmonthey are non existent here.Safelite is not going to send you any work. You will see what I am talking about when you start inputing them.I put my customer name and if there was a referral in the memo box.If you have any other ? email me at {removed by moderator(please exchange personal contact info through the e-mail of private message functions of this board rather than list your e-mail address)} and I will help you.I also do a lot of fleet work as well but I have them listed seperatly. You have classes as well that you can asign to different locations.(like i have a tech that works for me in another city).Bill

Just got off a live chat with a QB Desktop Sales Rep. They no longer offer a free version but some free download sites still have 2010 versions and it is still supported by Intuit, at least for the time being. I got called away from my desk so I could not finish the chat before I could ask what the differences were between the 2011 Simple Start, now available only online, and the 2010 free desktop version of Simple Start.

Somethings are just too good to last I guess, but anyone who acts fast may still be able to get a free version that should be good for a year or two.

Brent,

I got my version of this off of the cnet.com. On the first download, it said the download was corrupted, would you like to try downloading again.

So I did and it worked fine. The concern I had was when I first opened it, it appeared as though it was a 30 day trial, because it popped up a window that said you have 30 days remaining. Then I hit the register button. It did register it and since that time, I have not had that window pop up again. I know this because I am already inputting expenses, such as business cards, website etc.

So I am hopeful they don't discontinue it in a couple of years, after hopefully , I have 100's of customers listed in there....LOL

A real full blown version of Quick Books 2011 Pro can be purchased for $150.00. An accounting software is a tool just like your W/S kit. Invest in one to save the labor of having to reload all your customers and vendors again at a later date. JMHO

I agree with t4k but the version you downloaded can be upgraded to QuickBooks Pro, so just make sure you are saving your work regularly in case something goes wrong or they quit supporting the free version. When I started I didn't have an extra $150 for software, of course back then computers were a bit of a rarity. My point is that I understand trying to save a few bucks when getting started, especially until you are sure this is the software you want to use, but the free version was meant as a lost leader to get people hooked on on their full blown product. Kind of like Microsoft Works...ugh.

Well I guess the free trial is over. :( I went in and tried to enter my recent expenses and it would not allow me to post one of them. Kept telling me to upgrade to Quick Books Pro edition to have that functionality. Oh well, back to the accounting software drawing board. I have a Quicken program which I use for another company I have going, but just can't seem to figure out how to add a second company to the mix. I use to think I was computer literate...
