Do you actually need the networks?

Do you actually need to go through the networks in order to get paid by the insurance companies? I use the networks now, I don't like them, but I guess they are a necessary evil... or are they? Can't I just mail the invoice in to the insurance company? Sure it might take longer to get paid but wouldn't I be able to just bypass the networks altogether?
