OK, lets think in a creative way here, shall we? I can't find good help. I would love to hire a tech/temporary-manager that can/will also cold call sell (not telemarketing, but door to door). I have trained many people, but they don't have the umph to go out and hustle.
I have started a new business that I would love to work full-time next summer, but I am too busy with windshields. I don't want to shut down my business or turn clients away, but I also have slow days that a tech would need to go out and dig up some work. Are there any roving repair pros out there that travel from place to place taking over business operations so small timers like me can take a weekend or summer off? Has anyone experimented with similar?
This, as all detail-type businesses is strictly a mom-and-pop situation. I knew two guys in the mid-1980's who started up in the San Francisco Bay area concentrating soley on truck and bus fleets and car dealers. Within three years they had over 1500 (no typo) accounts and about 20 or so people working for them: name a fleet or a factory brand car dealer in the Bay area - it belonged to them. Two years after that they were out of business. Why? employees double-billing, making up repairs, stealing accounts (the non-compete agreement was basically unenforceble) not showing up at the account as directed or promised, etc, etc. Basically, if the employee has any brains, one of the first thoughts that go through his/her mind after training and a smidgen of experience is: "Why am I working for this guy for way less than the price of the repair?"
