Windshield pits???

Post by dnkies »

Hello All,

I have a potential customer who has a few pits on his windshield, but they are not actually through the outer layer of glass. My question is this: Will insurance companies pay for to have just the pits on a windshield repaired? Thanks for your help.

To my knowledge that will not be covered since it is associated with normal wear and tear.

Korey,

You beat me to it!

As a matter of fact this is the exact thing that is the Highest Scam in our industry as we speak. Companies are either creating the damage themselves without the customer knowing or telling customers that the "NICKS" and "PITS' in their windshields are covered by the insurance. Regardless the pictorial above is a great illustration,

It is my opinion that charging the insurance for pits is fraud because there is no chance of further loss. I educate the customer about looking for a crack or black. I use a scribe to carefully pressure the pit to verify there is no crack. If neither is present, I clean out the pits, put a drop of resin on them, and then pit resin and tab. Most people will appreciate your honesty, ask for your business card (give'em a couple extra for friends and family), and even give ya a couple bucks cash for the trouble. Ask for their future business.
I do this almost every day I work at my site. About two weeks ago got a dispatch for 3 chips. Three pits, approx. 30 miles roundtrip, customer was shocked I didn't want to bill insurance. I am confident I will do work for her in the future. End of story she called her agent and Lynx and wanted me to be commended. Doing the right thing and the commendations were better to me than the $70.

Either through misunderstanding or deliberate fraud, insurance companies leave themselves open to this kind of fraudulent claim. The reaction in the UK was to recommend to their insured to use a nominated national company as their preferred repairer, but they monitor possible abuse by "mystery shopping" and randomly selected inspections. As a direct result of this, one large company was found to be making fraudulent claims and they received a hefty fine of around one million pounds and resulted in some their executives being dismissed.

We recently added a page to our website that goes into detail about what is repairable and what isn't on a windshield.

Due to forum guidelines the URL was removed from the post above, but below is the information on novousglasscs's website.

If your windshield has a surface chip, but there are no dark spots under the chipped area, it means that the damage has not gone all the way through the first layer of glass, and generally does NOT need to be repaired: this is a cosmetic problem only.
If your windshield has a chip with a dark spot under it that looks like a star, bullseye, half circle, etc., and the total damaged area is smaller that the size of a quarter, it can likely be repaired.
If your windshield has a crack that is smaller than the size of a dollar bill, and is less than 2 months old, it can likely be repaired.
If your windshield is heavily pitted and it is becoming difficult to see through the windshield in sun glare or at night, it should be replaced. There are currently no products on the market to remedy this pitting problem.
If your windshield has a crack longer than the size of a dollar bill, we highly recommend you replace your windshield, as we are not seeing good long-term results with cracks longer than about 6″-8″.
Most insurance companpies will WAIVE your comprehensive insurance deductible–meaning NO out-of-pocket expense to you–for small chips, and for cracks shorter than the length of a dollar bill. We will handle all the insurance paperwork for you–just give us a call and we’ll take care of all the billing details!

Just curious... Pits are usually pretty small... Is it common practice to use a drop of resin, then pit resin and tab to the pit?
