Hello. I think I've found what I'm looking for.

Post by Robert GC317 »

I just wanted to say hi and say that I think this forum is a great resource.

I've always wanted to own my own business and for years I've been trying to figure out just what type of business that would be. I think I may have found it! I've been dying to leave my job and its unhealthy work environment and this looks to be a way out. I think WSR and HLR will suit me.

I'm currently in the research phase and look forward to learning more and getting started. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as time passes.

Thank you for this forum!

This is the place to do a lot of research. "Dont quit your day job" until you make sure this is what you want. I kept mine for a few years until I was sure I could survive with just the W/R alone. Good Luck!

That's one thing I do plan on doing is keeping my job until it's possible not too. It also goes with some of my early concerns like competition in the Southern CA area.

I'm curious, would any expenses for attending training in OR be deductible on taxes?

I think that would be more of a question for your tax accountant than a bunch of windshield techs. I do know you would get an answer you could count on with an accountant.

I'm no accountant either so please don't take my word for it, but legitimate business travel expenses, including meals, lodging and airfare are all tax deductible. The cost of the training class is deductible as well. Here is a link to the IRS website where you can get additional information. http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc511.html

Just be sure you keep all of your receipts and note what each one was for. Document when you left and when you returned from the trip, why the trip was necessary, etc. You can use a spreadsheet to keep track of everything and just staple your receipts to it or purchase an expense log to keep accurate records. I think it makes sense to use a qualified accountant to file your taxes, and most will give you a free consultation in which you can ask how they recommend you keep track of your business expenses. It doesn't have to be complicated, just organized.

Thanks. I want to start all of this fresh in the new year. I figure it will be easier when it comes tax time. I do my own personal taxes at the moment but will surely use an accountant once starting a business. Just wanted to get an idea at the moment and build up some posts here on the forum.

Robert gc 317: Brent is correct. My wife and I own a Tax service. Get a copy of the tax guide and it list exactly what you can or can't claim. I use the miliage formula for my vehicles. Just keep a record of all your expenses. Advertizing, miliage, supplies, training, meals while on trips for training etc... Look for an experienced tax preparrer and Bookkeeper that is semi-retired. Their rates are fair and most are very knowledgeable about SP or LLC set ups. Have a good day. Candyman.
