Heat & Moisture Removal
Re: Heat & Moisture Removal
Mr Chips
If you remove the injector from the glass while in suction you get no more than a drop or 2 of run out(weather it be for acetone, or resin). This method take les than a miniut to do, and insures a dry repair wihtout resorting ot heat. Go and pop a few bulls eye's on a pratice WS and hose it down so you see water in the breaks. Then practice removing the water. For the technique to work at its best you need at-least 10" of mercury of vacumm, but a low vac injector could do the job as well, but take a litle more time.
Screenman, where's you 2 cents(or schillings) worth on this subject, you are after all the one around here wiht the most moisture to deal with on a regular basis?

Re: Heat & Moisture Removal
Holiday I wish I have no idea where all the work from right now but as long as people want me to do it I will keep charging at the moment I am doing 10 hour days and at my age 49 that is way to much.
Dry out I have not got a clue on how to do it 100% every time. But up till now I have relied on micro blow torch and a vacuum pump ( mityvac or something like ).
Now the suprise for me at least Jeff or maybe someone else at Delta has sent me a chipdryer to try out I must admit the first time I used it the damage cracked out which is something I have only had happen once in the past ten years at least using a torch, But after using the chipdryer a few times I must say that it works realy well on small bullseye and starbreaks.
This I think is due to the fact that it only warms a very small area of the screen unlike the torch this allows the screen to cool down a lot quicker.
The method I am using is clean pit/drill and pop if required apply chipdryer then place vacuum pump over chip whilst it cools, then drop in some dry out solution warm again and vacuum pump again repeat 2 or 3 more times as required.
I will let you all know more about what I think of the chipdryer over the next few weeks.
Must go it is my 31 wedding anniversary which when you consider we were only 17 and 18 when we got married is a good innings, I think I have got her nearly trained. So I best spend a little time with her instead of you lot.

Re: Heat & Moisture Removal
Moisture evaporators are an excellent, effective tool, but certainly can be dangerous.
Before using, make sure the windshield is reasonably warm. Hold moisture evaporator up to damage for no more than 20 seconds. If this did not remove the moisture completely, allow to cool, then do another 20 second cycle.
People get into trouble by using it too long in one spot, or using it on a windshield that is cold.
Once again, as with any heat source, it has the potential to extend cracks, so always be careful.

31 years? what the heck did you do? the average sentence for murder is 20 yrs! :^)
Re: Heat & Moisture Removal
Quick question: As the temperature increases, does the glass expand or contract? Reason I'm asking - If you picture the leading edge of a fracture line, you would think that expansion of the glass would not cause a run, whereas contraction would put pressure on that leading edge, continuing the tearing action. But I'm reading here that heat causes expansion and I know cracks run with excessive heat so now I'm a little baffled. Thanks for the future input.
Re: Heat & Moisture Removal
All matter expands when heated and condenses when cooled. The cracking is caused by rapid or excessive heat. The same can happen with rapid or excessive cooling. It's the rapid and excessive that are the key, not whether it is hot or cold.
