I ask:
Is the chip smaller than a quarter or 50 cent piece?
Is it far enough away from the driver's view so's not to be a problem?
What town are you in?

It helps to keep the first questions few and short. These three old standbys get the conversation started and if they haven't asked the price or just told me to come fix it, I ask them if they'd like a quote. Most people say yes and most seem very appreciative that I offered.

Don't ask inch questions.
The general public doesn't know the difference between one foot and one inch.

I ask ...

Are there any cracks longer than your middle finder?
