Will the real windshield repair technician please stand up;)

Please do not get me wrong here. Perhaps this was not the best thread to insert some reality as I see it. It was not specifically aimed at this topic but more in general and how it could impact a newcomer due to some people here. I am all for everyones continued success and for the betterment of each other and this industry.

I know for a fact that some long time and respected forum members do not post regularly any longer due to it. That is there perogative but is reality.

Lets be frank.....The ones that will make will make it inspite of this forum. The ones that will fail are the ones that would have anyway.
Some times you have to wear "Big Boy" pants and just go and do it.The failures always have an excuse why they are failing or I can remember when it was better Bla,BlaBla,the economys not good,I dont want to go back to that dealer anymore,BlaBla Its too cold/its too hot ETC.ETC.........Its funny how we are our worst problem at times. The hardest thing to do in any business is have the courage and common sense to know the true problem.Sometimes it looks back at you from the mirror in the morning............................................................ If it was easy every one would be doing it!!
Oh and back to the forum question $1260.00 not all was W/shields but a combination of services and actually includes a couple of hours on Sat AM to finish up.The money is out there but its not going to be handed to you.You have to sell it first and this is where most go wrong.

Brian,

Why don't the long time and respected members post regularly any more? Is it because that some of the posts have no relevance? I feel that has been a problem for a long time, but short of banning a few of the worst offenders I don't know what to do about it. Maybe that is what needs to happen, but only as a last resort. Instead I have been trying to give friendly reminders to stay on topic, limit the sarcasm, and limit the negativity. Hopefully that will work, but it's too early to tell. If I have missed the point, please explain what you mean.

I had complaints from two very valuable forum members last week, both considering leaving the forum, at least temporarily, due to the actions of one particular member. We certainly don't want that to happen, but I also hope not to have to take drastic measures.

As for this thread, it is exactly what I would want to hear if I was just getting into the business, as long as it is believable that is. I sure wouldn't want to start a business that I didn't think could make me any money. However, if you have reason to believe some of us are not telling the truth, then I am with you all the way. Maybe another good topic would be what a newbie can expect to make in an average week, month, or year. My first year was not particularly impressive, but for a guy that was out of work I was very excited just to average a couple of repairs a day.

We have a lot of customers that are happy with a couple of repairs a day, but I think it is very motivating to know that there are some folks that are averaging 10+ repairs per day, and in some cases doing that in multiple locations.

I tend to agree with Brian.. The advertisements in the magazines publish "That you can make over $100,000.00, doing windshield repairs in just one year".. How many of you did that, your first year? or second year? Or still have not reached that number? Yet, the ads are attractive to the readers.. And the people placing the ads are in business to sell the equipment and supplies and make the money.. However in their defense the small print does read: "Training is available at our location for a mere $1200.00 for 2 days of hands on" Now, I ask.. Why would the suppliers/manufacturers not make the training mandatory to keep the botched repairs off the streets. Yes, I blame the suppliers.. Not the buyers. Call them uneducated consumers with a dream..

Then they do a google search for windshield repair and find a forum like this one.. And lurk, and read and think "hey, I don't need training and I can make $300 a day or more just by reading these posts".. And unless their heart is in it 120% and they have a personable ambience they will fail.. Not because of the equipment, not because of their dream but because they "read" somewhere that they could make big money, easily without aquiring the proper training. And, forums like this feed unto them.. Now, before you flame... This forum and others also do our industry a justice in allowing us to share ideas and techniques.. But, the posts are not always 100% accurate, nor the concepts clear, and for the most part untested as it was tried once and appeared to work.. So now everyone reading is suppose to take it as the gospel and go with it.. God forbid if anyone disagrees because thats a forum no-no.. Do not step on peoples toes.. Do not tell them they are wrong and ask for proof from their source(s) to show you they are not. Its the same here as any other forum.. The old timers get tired of having to repeat themselves, and not being listened too. While the brand new, I got my kit last week professional knows it all.. Sometimes its easier just to sit back and watch them fail.. Although we all know when they fail, it crumbles a bit of the very foundation under our own business that we have worked to make strong enough to support us.

As for anyone's "best day".. Who really cares? If Scott is averaging $1500 per week (as reported by him) thats only $75-$77k a year.. Sure it sounds impressive til you see the year totals.. Now consider this. $250 a day, 5 days a week.. and you will be right there with him without working weekends.. Does it really matter? No.. As long as you are happy doing what you like to do.. Meet new folks, make new friends and get paid doing it..

Skepticism put into perspective, interesting to say the least. I started this thread for fun, just curious as to what other guys had done in a single day, period. Amazing how it has grown from there. In my initial thread I described my best day, how I accomplished it and what my total was. I also made it clear it has NEVER happened since with my best single day being in the $1600 range.

Everyone please "re-read my posts CAREFULLY".

I never said anyone was a liar in this thread or any other for that matter. I was responding to another post that opened the door. I was commenting in general about inherent problems with open forums like this one or any other and how easy a new comer could be misled by crackpot comments. If the shoe fits, wear it. The bottom line is there are some here that post you really have to scratch your head at and I am being nice. Like it or not and it does not take the sharpest knife in the drawer to pick up on it.

Brent,

It is a combination of things that have made members leave. I am certainly not going to post on there behalf though. Sorry I do not have the easy fix and not sure there is one. We as members have a choice stay or go when we do not like something or someone. You will never be able to keep all people happy at all times so people will always come and go and come again or never comeback.

I should have posted a new thread for this topic. Maybe you could take my posts and create a new thread.

S&W Glass Repair,

Why would you feel this was directed at you? Since you created the thread, perhaps you took it personal. Maybe you should read more posts as it is quite obvious. I am sorry you do not recognize them but that ability can not be learned here.

Again your post read:

The real shame is that anyone who knows the trade and operates a real business can laugh at some of the posts while the new comer with with a boat load of ambition may get misguided only to be disappointed down the road in the real world.

Because you don't name anyone in particular you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see an insult. I didn't take it personally but feel you insulted every single person who posted in this thread, again insinuating. I only asked for clarification. I'm sure you've heard the saying "if it smells like sh*t, looks like sh*t, it probably is sh*t"

Again I only asked for clarification of your words. The post was started as fun and that was it. I was curious what other guys have done in a day. I don't think there was one post that was, as you put it "can laugh at some of the posts", I didn't get that at all from anyone of the members who responded to the thread.

Brent I'm interested in your input:

Seeing as I am one of the high earners on this post I thought I should tell how it was done. 3 very large fleets in one day one was a new call so lots of work. Also I charge
33,000 + screen repairs over 18 years and still learning.

I am not going to waste anymore time with you on this. It is not about you or your thread or anyone who posted in your thread if you re-read my posts CAREFULLY. Got it now? Maybe Brent can further help you out with this.
